Maserati is a band near and dear to me. It was exciting to watch this record come together, from rough mixes to the sleek, polished album it is today. I'm so happy I was able to put them in touch with my friend Bruno, who worked with them to create the striking desert sci-fi album art reminiscent of Dune and the falling monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Driving, pulsating, dynamic "Moroder metal" shredding... VII is exactly what we all wanted this album to be. My dad once made a Miami Vice comment about Maserati, but it's not hard to imagine them scoring a Miami Vice reboot, or a sequel to Drive. They're one of the most aptly named bands I know.
Maserati's Coley Dennis is the mix master, and put together a handmade mix CD for the lucky ticket winner. You might just become the proud owner of the CD on the right. (The one on the left is mine! You can't have it!) I've spun my last Coley mix to the point where it's scratched beyond playing. Heavy on krautrock and psych, you'll find a who's who of Maserati's influences. We'll have it streaming next week as they kick off their tour, but the tracklist is a surprise for now.
One lucky person will win a pair of tickets to Maserati's album release show this Saturday (10/27) at The 40 Watt Club AND a handmade mix CD.
