Searching for Sugar Man + Sixto Rodriguez
Last Friday my friend Dottie and I had a lady date-night: drinks at Manhattan, and a movie at Cine.
We watched Searching For Sugar Man, and I hope all my Athens friends get a chance to see it before it leaves. Cine will have it until at least November 29, but after that, another film might take its place. I knew very little about Sixto Rodriguez before seeing the film, and the story was the sort of real life happy ending that makes this music publicist and human being's heart warm.
A big thanks to my roommate, for tolerating me playing (and singing) "Sugar Man" on an endless loop last Saturday. Light In The Attic Records is reissuing Cold Fact, Coming From Reality, and the film's soundtrack. Both reissues might end up on my Christmas list.

Design*Sponge Athens, GA City Guide
This fall I had the pleasure of co-writing the Design*Sponge City Guide with my friend Natasha for my beloved home of the past eight years, Athens, Georgia.
It was difficult to narrow down all of our great local businesses, so we let the aesthetic of Design*Sponge and their average reader guide our decisions. These are the places we'd recommend to a friend visiting town, so these are the places our coworkers, our friends, and the two of us frequent the most. Special thanks to Rinne Allen for looking over our notes and tipping us off to additional points of interest for Design*Sponge fans. For a more complete guide to Athens businesses, check out Flagpole's annual Guide to Athens.
If you're ever in my city, give me a shout!

Guest Mixtape - Morgan from Morgangster
My pal Morgan (check out her blog Morgangster!) and I decided to swap mixes for guest posts this week. Morgan and I lived on the same dorm hallway our freshman year of college (awwwwwwwww) which makes her one of my oldest Athens friends. She is an excellent graphic designer, wordsmith, and enthusiastic human being.
Mixtape Masta Morgan ^
My November mixtape can be found on her corner of the web this week!
Morgan's mix features Twin Tigers, The Brunettes, Jeremy Messersmith, and more. She included one of Sufjan's Christmas tracks, which is fun for me since our radio department handles his promo and, we've been playing the new holiday boxed set nonstop in the office (it included temporary tattoos and stickers!)
Needle Felting Class at Treehouse
Tonight I went to a needle felting class at Treehouse Kid & Craft.
I went knowing nothing about felting. The materials were inexpensive, and you can pick it up quickly!
The class size was small, so all of our urgent does-this-look-weird's and am-I-doing-this-wrong's were addressed.
By the end of the class, we each made a mushroom and a fox. I'm going to make more, and turn them into ornaments like the ones Treehouse sells.
Visit Treehouse Kid & Craft's website to check out their shop and class offerings.

November Wishlist
Clockwise from top right:
Sidney Clog Boots in Bordeaux Leather
from Lotta From Stockholm
I adore my other pair of clogs from Lotta. They're so well made, and so comfortable.
MELT Sandalwood/Suede candle
from Target
I like candles at home, but I'm not a big fan of fruity scents. This is one of the least expensive earthy scented candles I've come across.
Rane Brass Scarab Turquoise Beetle Cuff
from Max & Chloe
Fox Crewneck Sweater
from Old Navy
Maguba Casablanca bootie
from Lotta from Stockholm
I don't often wear much of anything with a heel, but my other pair of Lotta's clogs are more comfortable than most flats I own. These look like they'd be cozy and stable, with a little bit of a heel, and the deep red color would go with anything. Christmas list contender.
Panther ear tunnels
from ASOS
Wide Brim Hat
from Gap
Why wouldn't you want to look like Indiana Jones this winter?
Richer Poorer Swindler Socks
from ASOS
CLOSED: GIVEAWAY: William Tyler & Art Rosenbaum on 11/18
Jay Steele from Athens Provisions is guest posting today, and he's giving away a pair of tickets to this Sunday's show at 399 Meigs (the brick building across from the old jail.)
William Tyler is one of the most exciting artists experimenting in the world of traditional American music. William has performed as a multi-instrumentalist with acts and artists such as Lambchop, Silver Jews, Courtney Tidwell, Charlie Louvin and Candi Staton. His 2011 debut solo album, Behold The Spirit, was described by Pitchfork as “arguably the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more.”
Art Rosenbaum is a true luminary. He has spent a lifetime documenting and performing traditional American folk music. We think Art will serve as the perfect local foil to William and his instrumental stylings.
399 Meigs is a beautiful, intimate space. The Will Johnson and Anders Parker show there was one of the best in recent memory.

Album Stream: Grape Soda - "Form A Sign"
Grape Soda are one of my favorite Athens bands, my dear friends, and publicity clients. Not covering up any bias here. This is a personal blog, after all.
When they completed their debut LP Form A Sign and shared it with local friends, it was a hit around town. Today marks the national release date for Form A Sign, and the first time it's been blasted out into the ether, far and wide.
You should probably order it on vinyl, but then again... I'm biased toward Grape Soda AND vinyl.
-------
Athens, GA organ and drums duo Grape Soda is brothers Mat & Ryan Lewis.
Mat spent his musical coming of age with political punk in the DC area and played drums with DIY band The Max Levine Ensemble and Teenbeat Records group Pocket Rockets. Ryan was a member of Athens bands Kincade and Bill Doss’s The Sunshine Fix. Both brothers were in The Agenda and The Buddy System.
Ryan runs Kindercore Records with Dan Geller (Ruby Isle, I Am The World Trade Center, Gold Party, The Agenda.) The imprint has amassed more than 80 releases, including early records from of Montreal, Olivia Tremor Control, and Dressy Bessy.
Using spaced out farfisa and driving drum rhythms as a vehicle for their clever songwriting, the brothers Lewis create indie-pop for fans of The Monks or Devo. Simultaneously murky and effervescent, like the beverage with which they share a name, Grape Soda blends the noisy exuberance of psychedelia with the minimalism of post punk.

Lauren Gregg's Moonrise Kingdom dog print + Reggie's vet bill fundraiser!
Meet Reggie. Reggie belongs to my friends Shil and Lauren. Reggie has bad skin allergies, and the vets still can't figure out what is wrong. That adds up to some pricey vet bills.
Lauren made this painting of Snoopy, the dog from Moonrise Kingdom, for a Wes Anderson themed art show in San Francisco called Bad Dads. All proceeds from the prints she sells will go toward Reggie's vet bills! Right now you can receive 30% off her whole Etsy shop with the code ilovereggie! I have one of Lauren's paintings in my room, and it means so much to me.
