Half Off Unearthen Jewelry Today Only

My friend Adam knows my style well. He passed me a link to this shop of other-worldly crystal jewelry, and the hot tip that the code "leap" gets you 50% off at check out. Beautiful website complete with interactive garden of crystals tells you what benefits each stone is believed to offer the wearer.

Wish List: Lotta from Stockholm Clogs

I love clogs and clog boots because they give me some extra height without feeling like I'm sacrificing comfort and stability. I think heels can be attractive. Wobbling like the weakest gazelle in the herd.. not so much. I have a curvy back that give me trouble, and I feel like some clogs help my posture and evenly distribute my weight. Others just look good.

I especially love Lotta from Stockholm's selections for how sweet they look with vintage dresses. I keep seeing these beauties all over some of my favorite style blogs.

Every style they sell is handmade. I hope to someday score a pair! Especially into the last pair pictured. Might have to order those... Torn between tan or red... thoughts?

Bonus: The website has a clearance and seconds section.

Punfest: When Music Folks Get Sick

A chat with one of my favorite pun-smiths, Candice Jones, of Partisan Records/Figure 8 Management.

Candice:  Our whole office is sick. It's like a symphony of sniffles, sneezes and coughs. We should record it, run it though a few pedals, and release it on Partisan as a new noise band.

Video: Bear in Heaven - "Reflection of You"

My buddies Bear in Heaven released a dizzying new video for "Reflection of You" this week, directed by John Lee of PFFR art collective (Wonder Showzen.)

This track comes across less tribal than their last record, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, and more dancey, in the Holy Ghost! vein.

Their new record I Love You, It's Cool has been streaming slowed down by almost 400,000% since December 12, and will take until April 3 to complete one full play of the record, top to bottom.

The company I work at does their radio promo, so this record has been playing nonstop in the office.

Can't wait to reunite with these guys in Austin in less than a month. Lots of love for the dear friends at Hometapes, who will co-release this record with Dead Oceans on April 3, 2012.

Double Dog Dare: The Dogg Pound vs. The Varsity

It started out like any other Saturday: getting up early and going to the flea market to hunt for records and avocados from the produce venders. On the way back, I brought up wanting to try The Dogg Pound, a new-ish specialty hot dog joint in a location I always forget about (out Broad St. in the diner-looking building that use to be a BBQ place.) Coley added that speaking of hot dogs, in his 10+ years in Athens, he'd never been to The Varsity- not even the Atlanta location!

We joked about going to both places back to back, and how funny that would be, and seconds later decided it was a genius plan. We would set out to compare the subtleties of our two local hot dog purveyors, then food comas be damned, go to work at our evening jobs.

First stop was The Dogg Pound. I think you are supposed to read this mural to the tune of "Welcome To The Jungle."

When we walked in, two gentlemen were sitting at the corner and had already ordered. The menu had some enticing options, and it took us a few minutes to weigh the benefits of The Beverly Hills Chihuahua, The Chow Chow Dogg, The Boston Terrier, and The Philly Dogg, among others... and then another ten to fifteen minutes for the employee at the counter to take our order... and another ten to fifteen minutes to get our drinks... Everyone was certainly pleasant, it just seemed to take an awfully long time for sodas and hotdogs with only four customers in the restaurant. I felt bad for the drive-through customers who didn't realize the wait they were in for. Since The Dogg Pound also advertised deep fried treats, I was hoping to find some fried pickles or onion rings, in addition to the funnel cakes and fried twinkies. One pro of The Dogg Pound is that any item can be served as a beef hot dog, chicken dog, or tofu dog.

We settled on The Knickerbocker Knocker ("grilled dog topped w/ onion sauce, sauerkraut, and spicy brown mustard on a toasted bun") and The Chi-Town Dogg ("grilled dog topped w/ sweet relish, tomatoes, dill pickle spears, peperoncini peppers, mustard and onions on toasted poppy seed bun and sprinkled with celery salt.") The Kickerbocker Knocker was tasty, though the onion sauce was less of a sauce and more stewed onions. The Chi-Town Dogg was a bit disappointing. It wasn't on the bun listed, and there was no celery salt. I've only been to Chicago a handful of times, so I'm no expert, but I was under the impression that the two things that make a Chicago dog Chicago-style are sport peppers and celery salt. I'm a fan of banana pepper rings (that's what these seemed like,) but they aren't the same as sport peppers.

I really wanted to love this place! The menu is interesting and I'd like to try the other combinations, but I might give it some time before I go back. Maybe they just got hit with a big rush before we came in? But it was 12:30PM...

Next stop: The Varsity.  The Varsity was packed when we got inside, but their signature style is to move customers quickly, with ample employees at registers barking "What'll ya have? What'll ya have?" We ordered and received our chili dog, onion rings, and frosted orange (think frozen creamsicle drink) to split within five minutes.

I realize it's a bit unfair to compare a new independent restaurant to an established string of restaurants, and both places have their merits, but The Varsity emerged as the winner that day.
If you asked me to name a messy food, a chili dog is the first thing that would come to mind. Seems like Varsity found a way to drain their chili or cook off the excess water, making it surprisingly not messy, even when shared. Served standard with mustard, we added some ketchup for good measure. The onion rings are handmade, which taste great compared to the standard frozen kind you can get anywhere (watch out for the onion ring grease pool, though.) The frosted orange drink sealed the deal for Coley. It's a little less creamy and more icy than a milkshake, making it a bit less filling. Bonus: free hat.

Splitting this stuff was the way to go. I felt surprisingly not terrible afterward. Maybe I'm just growing too used to this kind of eating? Food comas soon subsided, and we made it into our respective evening jobs.

Upside Down - The Creation Records Story

Last night we watched the first half of this documentary about Creation Records, and the rise of bands like the Jesus & Mary Chain, T.V. Personalities, The Telescopes, Primal Scream, and Ride.

I learned a thing or two about the rise of shoe-gaze, the bands, the label, the London scene at that time, and how bad I am at understanding certain cockney accents.

It's a bit annoying that the same commercial interrupts every so often, but hey: you're watching a documentary for free. Finishing the other half soon!

Thanks to my pal Justin (check out Ghetto Blasters & Switch Blades) for the recommendation.

Local Music: Vincas Album Release Show Tonight at Caledonia Lounge

Blood Bleeds is streaming below. Album art by Matt Cherry (Maserati, Wizard Smoke.)

Vincas' debut LP Blood Bleeds is a highly recommended listen, consistent start to finish.

While Blood Bleeds is a debut release for the trio, each member is a veteran of Athens music scene. Chris McNeal provides strong vocals, sometimes brooding, sometimes growling, with a few hints of psychobilly ala The Cramps. On Blood Bleeds, McNeal is able to flex the vocal chords that rest during his instrumental performances with Maserati, as well as bass, with Scott Kviklys on guitar and vocals, and Joe McMullen on drums.

Evident on the record, but especially noticeable live, is the way these guys can balance full-speed power and intensity with restraint; working around each other instead of each member overpowering the other, and going off on a brief psych tangent, but bringing it back in tightly before becoming self-indulgent.

They'll be celebrating with an album release show tonight at Caledonia Lounge with The Darnell Boys and Atlanta's Gentleman Jesse & His Men (who also have a new record out March 20.) Vincas are a band that don't over do it when it comes to playing out, so this might be your last chance to see them for at least a month or two.

For fans of: The Scientists, Gun Club, Early 80s Australian Rock like Radio Birdman,  The Birthday Party, No-Wave, The Stooges, The Cramps, Suicide

Ann Steel & Roberto Cacciapaglia, 1979

Apparently, Ann Steel was a model from Michigan in the 70's who linked up with an Italian disco dude Roberto Cacciapaglia on a trip to Italy for modeling work, and this album resulted. I'm speechless watching the first video below. I love it. I can't get enough. I can't stop prowling YouTube for more.
Italo disco!

This record was re-released in 2011, and my pal Nick reviewed it for Pitchfork here.

Donna Summer - I Feel Love Italo Disco

It's 2:20PM EST. That means I'll be in the office for 5 more hours. Five hours will fly by, thanks to this Italo disco Donna Summer jam. Daniel of Whale Heart Records deserves a high five for passing this my way. Let's all do some wavy arm movements and then get back to our laptop gaze (did I just coin a genre?)

Colossus - 2/17 Caledonia Lounge

Is a crappy iPhone picture better than no picture at all? Discuss.

If there was a throwback video game in which the underdog bests the giant in a Roman gladiator match where wit, speed, and courage conquer all, Colossus would supply the soundtrack. While their stage banter and occasionally sci-fi inspired lyrical content might be humorous, their technical skill is dead-serious and awe-inspiring, particularly the dueling shredders on either side of the singer.

Every member of this band PERFORMS. Theatrical triumph, contorting shred-faces,  and metal band bravado come across as victorious and never pompous or cliche.

Colossus is everything I've ever wanted to watch in a metal band (okay, some pyrotechnics might be fun, but The Caledonia staff appreciates when bands leave those at home.) Their t-shirts aptly reflect their charm: a black cotton tee with classic metal imagery: pentagrams, skulls, goats, and cryptic symbols, balanced by two strategically placed circular designs in the chest area, and Lorem Ipsum text (standard place holder text used by graphic designers) in a medieval font, hinting at a Satanic ritual book; the attitude and style you expect from a metal band, with subtle jokes mixed in for those quick enough to catch them.

These guys don't take themselves too seriously, though based on their talents, I wouldn't fault them if they did.

Headliner Savagist sounded amazing, but that was expected.

Motivation from Henry Rollins

Thanks, Mr. Rollins. This is just the kick in the pants I needed to start of my work day right. Sure wish I knew who to credit for this print.

Cheap Finds: Black & White

I realize I should buy local, buy vintage, buy handmade, buy sweatshop free, and that I really shouldn't be buying anymore clothes at all until I get the Arrowhead Vintage online shop up and running and clear out my own closet... but every now and then, I cave in and make a little Forever 21 order (especially before an upcoming trip like SXSW for work.)

Here's what I picked up. Looks like I have black & white prints on the brain.

Weekly Recap:

Started the week with huevos rancheros brunch at El Tlaloc (Chase St., Athens, GA.) It's one of my favorite Mexican restaurants (it's really El Salvadorian and Mexican) in Athens.
Saw "The Artist" at Cine. Definitely one for the theatre. I think a lot of the silent film charm and use of the score would be lost on a home TV or laptop.
Work lunch with my work sibling. Did you know Trappeze has has french onion soup and a gruyere grilled cheese for $5? Now you know.
A valentine record from the dude. This guys aces it every time in the gift-giving department.
Pretty proud of myself for this one. My guy had to work Valentines Day night, so I showed up with a pizza (topped with thinly sliced hard salami and banana peppers.)
My first ever liner note thank you from the sweet guys of Future Islands. I cried a little when I found out about this over the summer, and may or may not have cried a little when I saw it in person. PR isn't always a thankless job.
My new Sao Paolo internet friend sent me his music and artwork.
Colossus at Caledonia Friday night. More about there here.
I've been collecting these coffee mugs over the years from thrift stores. Two of my favotes: Canada Animals and Yellowstone. One the way to the flea market Saturday morning.
The flea market wasn't exactly hoppin'...
But I still had some great scores.
Found this neat Grateful Dead songbook at the flea market for a few bucks. Posted the rest of the artwork here.
Tangerine Dream, Apple iDream.
Did a double feature at Varsity and The Dogg Pound to compare their technique. Blog post coming soon.
This guy was ghost-writing some blog posts.
Posted a giveaway for this Bruce Springsteen journal made from damaged vinyl LPs
Posted some surreal psychedelic art from Pena Branca.
Accidentally went to work dressed like a cave woman.
Found a great vintage dress at Agora. Now I just need to find an occasion to wear it.
Acquired some new additions to the record collection.
Closed out the weekend with a few minutes at home to straighten up my house. Now that my bangs are all grown out, I just want to cut them again. Anyone else feel the same way?
