Quince's Ashwood candle after smelling one burning in the bathroom of a pal's wine bar a few months back. Its notes: saffron and charred cedar rising through smoky guaiacwood, settling into dry woods and soft ash, described as "the scent of a fading fire."
That profile — saffron, charred cedar, guaiacwood, smoke, ash — made me think that perhaps, it was meant to be a dupe of Diptyque Feu de Bois (Wood Fire). It's one of Diptyque's most iconic scents, built around the smell of a crackling fireplace with birchwood and smoke, and it's one of the most frequently duped "smoky" luxury candles on the market. The "fading fire" framing in Quince's own description is a pretty direct echo of Feu de Bois's whole concept.
Which got me wondering... what are the other Quince candles potentially dupes for?
Please note: while I've ordered some of these, I haven't tried all of these! This is a summary of what people said most often online, across Reddit threads, blogs, etc. and when the naming notes matched up suspiciously closely... But these are still guesses! If you try any of these, please leave a note in the comments, for science!
They also have a bunch of perfume dupes with very Byredo looking packaging, plus diffusers and room sprays, but I haven't tried any of those (yet).
| Quince Candle | Most Likely Dupe For | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Les Baies (formerly Currant Noir) | Diptyque Baies | Blackcurrant + rose is Diptyque's signature — even the new name "Les Baies" is a direct nod to the French candle's actual name |
| Mediterranean Fig | Diptyque Figuier | Fig-leaf profile mirrors Diptyque's other most-duped scent |
| Bois de Santal | Le Labo Santal 33 | "Bois de Santal" literally translates to "sandalwood" — Santal 33's signature note, and the naming is about as direct as dupe-naming gets |
| Oud Rouge | Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 | "Rouge" + oud/amber profile is the telltale BR540 reference, one of the most-copied scents right now |
| Peony Dusk | Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede | Peony is the standout note in Jo Malone's popular floral |
| English Rose | Diptyque Roses / Jo Malone Red Roses | Classic rose profile shared by both houses |
| Marrakech Mint | Le Labo Menthe / Diptyque Menthe Verte | Cool mint-tea profile in the same lane as niche mint candles |
| Bergamot Basil | Jo Malone Basil & Neroli | Herbal-citrus combo echoing Jo Malone's cologne-candle line |
| Neroli & Yuzu or Neroli Soleil | Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt–adjacent citrus, or Diptyque Neroli | Citrus-forward, less tied to one exact icon |
| Côte Marine | Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt | "Marine" naming suggests the same salty-aquatic niche |
| Minérale | Le Labo/niche mineral-musk candles | Likely a stand-in for the "clean mineral" niche trend |
| Lavender Cedar | Le Labo/niche lavender-wood blends | Common cozy-woody combo across several brands |
| Palo Santo | Niche smoky-wood candles (e.g., Otherland, D.S. & Durga) | New arrival in the smoky-wood category |
| Noir Bibliothèque | Byredo/niche "library"-style leather-wood candles | Name directly echoes the "library" candle niche (leather, paper, wood) |
| Capri Citron | Anthropologie Capri Blue–adjacent citrus, or Acqua di Parma Fico | New citrus release |
| Heirloom Tomato | Flamingo Estate Heirloom Tomato | Direct name match to Flamingo Estate's viral garden-tomato candle |
| Golden Fig (limited edition) | Diptyque Figuier variant | Seasonal fig release |
Now if anyone has a Flamingo Estate Fig, Tree House by Byredo, candle dupe… PLEASE hit my line!
