Heavy Cream - "John Johnny"

In my mind's eye, I'm currently jamming to Heavy Cream's Super Treatment, while wearing an intimidatingly urban-chic, black leather jacket, and skipping ALL personal responsibilities in order to fully groove to "John Johnny," as it's well-deserved. The project, produced by Babe Ambassador Ty Segall, marries the Nashville band with ubiquitous elements of the San Franciscan sonic scape, including the omnipresent fuzz and distortion overlaid on top of garage punk foundations.

Listen to the track "John Johnny" and I challenge you not to have fun.

P.S. - Record nerds out there, I hope someone was able to snatch up one of the limited edition red/clear swirl vinyl of Super Treatment that came with...wait for it...customized shampoo.

Moonrise Kingdom Stills

You best believe I'll devote two posts in one month to a movie I haven't even seen yet. I have faith that it will be lovely.

Moonrise Kingdom trailer + Francoise Hardy song

Looking forward to this. Everything I'm finding online says due in theaters May 25, but I'm guessing that means the film fest circuit, then it will trickle down to local theaters. Françoise Hardy's "Le Temps de L'Amour," featured in the soundtrack, is also included below.

CLOSED. Giveaway: Dia de los Muertos cards from Native Bear

The best thing about my job is how many great people I get to meet (and the occasional free vinyl... and my coworkers... I digress.) I met Leela Robinson, the talented artist/biz lady behind Native Bearthrough her hubs, John, from ATL band Turf War. I've drooled over her designs for some time, from bear teeth, to animal skulls, to the cutest little beer can stamp you ever did see (the only beer can stamp I've seen, actually!)

She's been kind enough to give away a set of the sugar skull cards above to a lucky commenter! See below for details, and Leela's story:

"I have always been an illustrator and designer. My mother is an oil painter and my father is a musician, so I’ve always been surrounded by artistic energy. NATIVE BEAR was literally created after I decided that I wanted an image of my dog to stamp on hand fans for my wedding last spring. It came out so cute, and I’ve been hooked ever since!"
"When I create a rubber stamp, it all starts with an image. Whether I design it myself, or the client provides the artwork themselves, I hand trace the entire thing. Next, I press and rub the tracing paper (for real) into a wonderfully soft, pink carving rubber made by Speedball (it’s like buttah, y’all), and then I proceed to carve out the image with traditional carving tools."
"NATIVE BEAR designs are inspired by nature, tribal patterns, living locally, universal love, and fun times. I love the immediate satisfaction of carving a custom rubber stamp, and I love that I’m creating something that can be used over and over again. Hand stamping stationery is a tedious but fun process, and it makes giving a card that much more special, which I love. As the world continues to get faster and faster, I can speak for myself when I say that it’s important for everyone to take a moment to write a ‘thank you’ card, or a ‘thinking of you’ card."

I couldn't agree more... Which reminds me to get out a few thank you notes of my own!

Thanks, Leela!

A special gift: a Lauren Gregg painting

As some of you already know, my dear canine companion Majesty passed away May 1. I'm so grateful for the love and caring words my friends have shown me this week.

One thing in particular has been especially comforting: the gift of this painting by Lauren Gregg. It was an existing painting of Lauren's, and I had commented previously that the animal looked like Maj. This smiling creature floating up to space to be amongst the stars and the heavens is so special to me. My heart is glowing like ET right now for Lauren and her husband Shil. Now that I think about it, I've never actually owned an original painting before. My jaw dropped when Shil handed it to me at work the next day.

Next to it on my dresser is a collar made for Maj by Jonny Corndawg. I'm so glad I have this as a keepsake.

Thanks so much, friends. Losing a pet ain't easy, but it's worth it to have 'em.
