How To Dress Like You're In A Dystopian YA Movie

The new Hunger Games movie is in theaters and Divergent is on HBO, so my army kid proclivity for all things military, utilitarian, and tactical is eating up these wardrobes.

There seems to be a formula. Pick at least 3:
- Really cool jacket
- Military / Army green / fatigues
- Utilitarian / tactical
- Black + grey
- Modern / Futuristic
- Activewear / Nylon / Down
- Dust Bowl era beige and linen
- One piece of esoteric jewelry (bonus points if it contains DNA, a USB drive of secret plans, the coordinates of where you're supposed to meet your parents/love interest after the apocalypse/rebellion, or a note from your mentor/trainer.)

Scroll through below for a wardrobe to my imaginary YA dystopian movie:

Chelsea Boot Round-Up for Paste Design

This post was created for Paste Magazine's design section. You can read the original there.
I have spent more time than I'd like to admit this fall and winter stalking the perfect pair of Chelsea boots, to supplement the Bean boots I've been living in. I have plenty of heeled boots. What I'm talking about are Blundstone-esque, "Oh it's raining and I've been standing for 8 hours and now I need to run clear across the festival and grab something from the trailer? Yeah, that's fine!" Chelsea boots.

Work trips for me mean running all over a city in one night or festivals in unpredictable weather. You can save your macrame dress and flower crown festival fashion. Give me a denim shirt, jeans, and a pair of any of the boots below, and I'll be fine for 24 hours (well, feed me, too.)

I ended up buying the pair above (Silence + Noise Treaded Leather Ankle Boot ), but thought I'd share some of my other favorites:

Wearing: Lucy's Lockets

Lucy Farmer and her husband have been building homes together for 15 years. Drawing inspiration from her work as creative director of an architectural supply store, Lucy incorporates antique charms and one of a kind architectural hardware findings into jewelry.
An old key may find a new life as a charm, and a victorian keyhole might become a pendant in her Lucy's Inspired jewelry line. Lucy's Inspired gifted me the necklace pictured below. Beneath it are some of my other favorite pieces from her shop. Thank you, Lucy!

Suckers Apparel - Twin Peaks Collection

Since pretty much anything Twin Peaks related gets an auto-blog from me, this Twin Peaks clothing collection from Suckers Apparel was a no-brainer. Surely no coincidence, the model looks a lot like Audrey Horne.  Aside from the fun of Twin Peaks references, these pieces are also really elegant and wearable. They even have Twin Peaks printed leggings for chilly nights. What are your favorite fan culture + fashion collaborations?

Weekly Wants:

The Kinfolk Table: Recipe's For Small Gatherings is out now. I might buy it, or it might just make me jealous my life isn't as simple and elegant as a Kinfolk photo. (Or read the small-batch artisanal keyboard-hewn bespoke Kinfolk spoof Twittter.)

Birch print straws. Spiced cider and bourbon sold separately.

Hasbeen clog boots. Heels comfortable enough to walk in without wobbling and casual enough to wear to work without "why are you dressed up" comments from my male coworkers!

Revamping my living room has been a priority lately. After thrifting since highschool and co-owning a vintage store, I'm so tired of all the knick-knacks. I'm tired of kitsch. I want more clean and modern. It's kind of hard to believe this pair of Eames-style chairs is only $99 total. I couldn't find anything as attractive or inexpensive on the Ikea website, so I might break down and buy these soon.

Nike Free 3.0 v5 running shoes. I'm trying to get back to some kind of exercise routine. I need it. Badly. I have no energy lately by day, and work anxiety dreams by night. Hoping I can use new shoes to bribe myself into re-starting the gym membership or running.

Original Ray-Ban aviators. I don't know what happened to mine, but I sure to miss 'em. This is why I can't have nice sunglasses.

Follow me on Pinterest for more things I shouldn't be buying!

Weekly Wants 9/23

Couple days late on this post. My favorite time of year is starting. I collect skulls and skeletons (the fake kind) so this time of year I can't even go to the grocery store without seeing Halloween knick-knacks I want in my house all year round. Bye-bye monies.

Clockwise from the top center:
Laura George totem print // Caved in and bought this one and a cheap frame off Amazon.
C.O. Bigelow amber perfume oil // Been loving soft, warm scents lately.
Ecote suede biker boot // Digging this olive shade of suede since you could wear them with brown or black.

Athens Fashion Collective 2013 Fall Show

Athens Fashion Collective, an important resource for local designers, will have their fall showcase, Revive + Recreate, this Thursday. Doors open at 8PM and the first runway kicks off at 8:30PM in the Athens Banner Herald building.

Six local fashion designers are showcasing their work this year: Laurel Wells (from Atlanta, Georgia),  Colleen Quinn, Zidisha Dambuza, Lindsey Simunec, Shawna Maranville, and Sanni Baumgaertner//Community Service.

Tickets are $10 or $7 with student ID. There will be a bar and DJ Immuzikation is spinning tunes throughout the night. Model Citizen (the salon I go to) is doing hair, along with Pageboy Salon and Mary Sigalas Hair Studio, and makeup is done by Elijana Cosmetics and Mary E. Denis.

Wear: Pendleton Portland Collection Fall '13

Today Sara left a present in my inbox: a slideshow of the Pendleton Portland Collection Fall '13 lookbook. Leave it to Pendleton to get me excited about Fall when I haven't even reached Summer yet. If anyone knows where the boys who dress like this have been hiding out, please send them my way.

Here are some of my favorites from the Pendleton Fall '13 Portland Collection:

Wear: March new arrivals

Urban Outfitters hooked me up with some new duds at SXSW. Many thanks, friends! Glad I got to catch up with Morgan, Ally, Dryw, and Jessie!

So simple and useful.

Truly Madly Deepy camo T
My Army dad had one identical when I was a kid, but he sadly turned it into a cleaning rag. Now I have one!

BDG ikat button down
Going to wear this through late spring. So soft and breathable.

Leather Vans:
Big thanks to Pitchfork for hooking me up at the Show No Mercy metal showcase in Austin! Great day, and now I have some great shoes to member it by. Website linked above has 'em for half off.

Gap baseball tees:
Flattering fit, casual and effortless look. Won't shrink. 40% off everything online today and tomorrow.

Gap jeans:
Jeans are so hard to shop for blah blah blah my butt this my thighs that blah blah... I FINALLY FOUND SOME! Both the legging jean and always skinny in the darkest wash were just what I'd been waiting for, but be warned: they took 2-3 machine washes to shop staining my hands and nails blue.

Not pictured: Organix Moroccan oil sea salt wave spray:
This stuff works wonders, especially for reviving flat winter hair and zapping static.

Post-Holiday Splurges

I suppose that price-wise, these items aren't really splurges, but every holiday I attempt to put my gift moolah toward car insurance, emergency savings (is it really emergency when your car breaks like clockwork every three months?) etc, and my dad encourages me to put the gift money toward something fun.  Just obeying dad's wishes!

L-R
Cut-out Cuff // Forever 21

Gold skirt // ASOS // New Years Eve contender. Again, please fit.

Moto booties // Forever 21

Ruched piped sports bra // Forever 21 // These things are great. Not as constricting as a regular sports bra, and perfect for low cut button down shirts and tanks with wide arm holes. Kind of a bandeau, except not totally worthless.

Cheetah stud earring set // Forever 21 // Because I was $5 away from free shipping.

Royal blue simple shift dress // ASOS // Long obsessed with royal blue and shift dresses, this is a dream. Please let it fit me.

Today I'm Oggling: Bobbi Oxford from Madewell

I seem to have worn through almost all my oxfords. Wonder if I could break these in before SXSW rolls around?

Twin Peaks-inspired Elle fashion spread

I'm a big Twin Peaks fan, so I was excited to learn of this Elle fashion spread in the August 2012 issue, set in a very Black Lodge scene.

I found these images on WelcomeToTwinPeaks.com, but I'll be picking up a copy from the newsstand to take with me on a bachelorette trip this month: the first time I can recall flying anywhere NOT for work since college.

Moonrise Kingdom Harper's Bazaar Shoot

Harper's Bazaar shot Bill Murray and Kara Hayward to celebrate the release of Moonrise Kingdom. We're still awaiting news of a "now showing" date for Athens. My coworker at Cine said we will get it eventually, it's just unclear exactly what date. Her boyfriend who works at Beechwood said they will probably get it, and if they do, they'll probably show it briefly before Cine can. So in short: no news.

Photographer: Jake Chessum. Fashion Editor: Roxane Danset. Hair: Ward for Living Proof; Makeup: Alice Lane and Kara Hayward; manicure: Myrdith Leon-McCormack for Dior Vernis; grooming: Rheanne White for Kiehl's; production: Nicole Hektner and Larry McCrudden for the Custom Family; production design: Kris Moran; set design: Anne Koch.
