Moonrise Kingdom FINALLY In Athens + Playlists

(Click above for playlists based on characters from Moonrise Kingdom)

While I usually like to wait and see movies at Cine, I caved in last night and saw Moonrise Kingdom at the megaplex. I justified it since as an employee, I don't pay for tickets anyway, so I'm not really taking a sale away from our local non-profit art house, am I? If you have more willpower than I do, it'll be worth the wait to see it with a cocktail in hand at Cine.

I was so pleased with it. All of the little flourishes and motifs I've grown to love Wes Anderson movies for were amplified to a delightful degree, and releasing it at the start of summer was perfect timing. I maybe even teared up at the end? Just a little?

Without giving anything away, I can say that I'd love to have the landscape at the end framed in my house.

Below, the film's music supervisor has "curated a selection of favorites of the denizens of the island of New Penzance." Enjoy!

Moonrise Kingdom Harper's Bazaar Shoot

Harper's Bazaar shot Bill Murray and Kara Hayward to celebrate the release of Moonrise Kingdom. We're still awaiting news of a "now showing" date for Athens. My coworker at Cine said we will get it eventually, it's just unclear exactly what date. Her boyfriend who works at Beechwood said they will probably get it, and if they do, they'll probably show it briefly before Cine can. So in short: no news.

Edie Harper

Cat Carson, Western Scout

As a Charley Harper fan, I'm a bit ashamed that I didn't know about his wife Edie's artwork.
I would recount how sweet Edie & Charley Harper's story is, but the official statement on the website of their estate is sweet enough:

"Edith Riley McKee was an only child born in 1922 in Kansas City, Kansas. A dreamy child, she moved with her parents to Liberty, Missouri, when her father chose to open a short-order restaurant. On trips to see relatives on their farms and small ranches in the Sand Hills of Nebraska, she developed a lifelong love for animals and the vast, lonely expanses of the Middle West.

The family moved again, to Cincinnati, in the 1930s when Edie’s father landed a position with Procter & Gamble. They lived in an apartment on Springfield Pike while Edie attended Wyoming High School (graduating in 1939), all the while creating art at a level beyond her actual years. The desire for formal art training burned in her heart. So in 1940 the respected Art Academy of Cincinnati welcomed Edie as one of its most eager new admissions.
On the first day of the program, on the steps of the administration building, Edie met an equally earnest young man from West Virginia, Charley Harper. In classes and conversations, she learned that he shared her admiration of painters such as Miro and Klee. They studied printmaking with the Stampers and were fortunate enough to spend a semester with legendary Josef Albers, visiting to teach his Color Theory course. For several years afterwards Albers sent Edie his hand-screened Christmas cards.
When Charley was drafted for service in World War II, Edie interrupted her classes to aid the war effort in a civilian capacity. She photographed hydro dams and cement test samples and processed the film in the lab for the Corps of Engineers. Later, she would receive critical acclaim for the black and white photographs she took with her 8 x 10 camera employing her own imaginative subject matter. This resulted in an exhibition at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center.
Soon after the war, Edie and Charley resumed their studies at the Academy. Following graduation in 1947, they embarked on a six-month camping honeymoon throughout America. Edie kept an illustrated journal. Every day they sketched and painted, occasionally the same natural setting, and compared the results.
Upon their return from the honeymoon, Edie and Charley maintained separate studios in the basement of Edie’s parents’ home in Roselawn. The young couple helped care for Edie’s father, who had multiple sclerosis, and were able to save Charley’s earnings from his day job at Schaten Studio. In 1953 Edie gave birth to their son, Brett, named after California photographer Brett Weston."

To the only man I know tougher than John Wayne...

Happy Father's Day, Dad.

Back home from Desert Storm.

Thanks for:
 - Dressing me up in camo as a little kid and teaching me to hit the center of the C on the Coke can with my BB gun from the farthest corner of the yard.
- Being with me when I found my first arrowhead.
- Giving me a good sense of direction by hiking with me as a little kid to the center of the woods, then making me get us back to the car, only re-directing me if I got way off course (there's some huge parenting metaphor buried in there, I just know it.)
- That time in high school when my friends and I got lost on Marta after an On The Bricks concert downtown and you waited patiently at Indian Creek Marta station late at night until we re-routed ourselves back from the farthest south station. You checked in constantly to make sure we were safe, but didn't make me feel bad in front of my friends. I'm pretty sure you knew we'd been drinking, and you also knew I was embarrassed and sorry, so you took us out to breakfast the next morning anyway.
- Telling me on the first day of school that if anyone messed with me, I should punch them in the nose, and you'd meet me at the principal's office and stick up for me. (I never had to.)
- Clipping and mailing me that newspaper article recently about how to dress for success.
- Sending your first text message the other day to commiserate with me over Game of Thrones.
- Knowing how to fix anything, ever, but never telling me how to fix my own problems unless I ask. For epoxying shoes, tinkering with purse clasps, and giving me old bullet casings to make jewelry out of.
- Giving me your rainbow sherbet and eating the chocolate I ordered instead at Baskin-Robbins after church every Sunday when I was little, since I always seemed to want whatever you ordered more than mine. Sorry about those Tiny Tunes ice cream bars. That wasn't an even trade.
- Dressing up like Quail Man once to get a laugh out of me.
- Loving my dog as much as I do, and caring for him during many Pitchfork, SXSW, and Hopscotch fest trips.
- Trading records back and forth with me.
- Pulling me around on a cookie sheet with a string tied to it as a make-shift sled that time when I was tiny and it snowed.
- Teaching me how to budget money, though I know I'll never convince you I can :)
- Giving me the best example of a man and a dad I could ever have.
For having a great sense of humor. Check out that fake ponytail ball cap!

Today I'm Oggling: Skull Pillows from The Rise and Fall

I don't need any more throw pillows or skull motif items for my home but this would look so good on my turquoise sofa. $25 from Fab.com over the next two days. I'm also into the palm chart pillow below, available from Urban Outfitters for $34. Someone please put an Internet shopping block on my laptop...

Nellie & Joe's Key Lime Pie

There's enough in this bottle for four pies. Maybe not after I add it to gin and soda.

Today over brunch at Harry's Pig Shop, since I'm always plotting my next meal, I told Coley I wanted to learn to make key lime pie this month. This month turned into today, so we could strategically enjoy pie while knocking out as many episodes of Game of Thrones as possible.
But what's
in key lime pie? Some kind of thick pudding type thing? Maybe with a little gelatin? Egg whites? The iPhones come out. "Key lime juice. Sweetened condensed milk. Egg yolks."

That's it? Yep, that's it.

After a quick Kroger run, we had everything we needed. Within 5 minutes, assembly was done. After 15 more, it was cooling on the counter. It was so cheap, easy, and delicious, that it looks like I found my go-to summer potluck item. Guess I shouldn't have just told you all how cheap and easy it is!

Note: Key lime juice and lime juice are not the same thing.
Behold! A crappy iPhone photo of a not at all crappy pie! We topped it with Cool Whip and lime zest, and used a store bought graham cracker crust.
Tropical cocktails, you say?
Ingredient cost: $8 (three leftover eggs and 3/4 leftover bottle of juice)
"You're in my zone. Let me do my thing." Personally, I like a guy who gets assertive about making pies.
"More smile." -Coley

Just Nature Designs

Last month I won this pretty little piece of neck candy from a contest from Just Nature Designs hosted by Somethings. I admit that I get excited to win anything, and to receive anything in the mail, so this was a real double doozy for me.

I'm most excited because this is something I would have bought myself! It's no secret that I love crystals, and at $36, this necklace is reasonably priced for something handmade from quality natural stones. If I hadn't won, I probably would have ordered it.

So a great big thank you to both Just Nature Designs and Somethings! I've already worn this necklace a bunch, and it's going to become one of my staples.
The sweet packaging made it feel like even more of a present. Little envelopes to open within more envelopes to open.

Matthew E. White - "One Of These Days"

Has there ever been a Hometapes artist that has just looked so much like a Hometapes artist? Matthew E. White's debut record Big Inner will be out on Hometapes and Spacebomb on August 21.

Matthew E. White is like buttah. This record is like soaking in a hot tub while the sun sets over the Grand Canyon (a minimal brass band is playing in the canyon) with a drink in your hand surrounded by a few people you love (just a few. Keep it mellow.) A chorus of echoes from Stax Records ghosts chimes in. Please, envelope me in your smooth, soulful, deep voice before I melt into a puddle of bliss. This record is one chill soul hug.

This record has been my afternoon happy-place when the work day bears its toll on my sanity.  Side B features another joyful being, Phil Cook (Megafaun) on piano.

His Tumblr/Twitter bio sums it up best: Sock it unto others as you would have them sock it to you.
Preach.
